Should You be Worried About Sustainable Cannabis Packaging?

While the cannabis industry is growing, businesses understand that being ‘green’ is very important. This is especially true for an industry that deals with producing and selling a plant and its products. You must be familiar with the fact that every cannabis product needs excessive packaging. This is done to ensure that the products are childproof, and hence require layers of plastic packaging. Whether you buy recreational cannabis or medical cannabis after getting your MMJ card, the products are packed the same way.

For years, businesses have been using plastic for the packaging of most of their products. Plastic has become a very big part of consumerism. It is a big problem as it produces a lot of waste while also causing damage to the environment. However, cannabis consumers now want sustainable packaging. And the industry is listening to its consumers and grabbing on this high-value opportunity. To make this entire industry even more sustainable, businesses are beginning to use hemp-based plastic. Let’s learn more about it.

We all are aware of the fact that petroleum-based plastics can be harmful to our environment. This is the reason why many people are now choosing products that come with sustainable packaging. Surveys all around the world show that consumers tend to go for brands that share similar values as theirs. That’s why sustainable cannabis packaging is now becoming a concerning topic for cannabis sellers.

As I mentioned before, cannabis products are required to be childproof. The rules and regulations for the working of legal cannabis in states are very strict. That is why the packaging is also required to have excessive layers. Petroleum-based plastic became a go-to material to use for packaging because it is cheap and is easy to make. But, due to its negative effects on the environment, many cannabis businesses are choosing hemp-based plastic for packaging.

The petroleum-based plastic can take hundreds or even thousands of years to break down. Whereas, hemp-based plastic can break down in just 6 months, making it a better option for packaging.

But if these hemp bio plastics are better than petroleum-plastics, then why isn’t the entire industry already using them?

Well, the answer to this question could be the fact that the production of it is more expensive. However, there are certain companies that are leading the charge with hemp. These companies are now making packaging only for the businesses that use hemp products. They also aim to educate more and more people about the plant and how it is a great alternative to petroleum-based plastic. But the entire thing has its own problems. One of the biggest problems is maintaining the supply chain, as it is expensive.

There are still not many farmers who grow hemp, however, the Farm Bill changed things a little. Also, as hemp is growing in popularity, more consumers are getting attracted to hemp-based plastic packaging. And it is a no-brainer to know that consumers are the ones that make the final decision.
